Won four Grand Slam singles titles — the Australian and French Championships in 1956 and Wimbledon in 1956 and 1957 — and four Davis Cups between 1952 and 1956. He was known for aggressive net play and physical strength, and for the chronic back trouble that shortened his peak. He and his wife later built and ran a tennis resort at Fuengirola in Spain, where he died in 1994.
