Won 18 ATP singles titles including five Masters events and reached the 1998 Australian Open final, but never won a major. He became the first Latin American to reach world No. 1, in March 1998, and remains the only player to hold the No. 1 ranking without a Grand Slam singles title. A back injury ended his career at 28; he later played the Champions Tour, commentated and assisted Chile's Davis Cup team.
