Won the 1971 US Open and the 1972 Wimbledon title, took the inaugural year-end championship in 1970 and was ranked world No. 1 in 1971 and 1972. Away from his results he is most widely known as the name on the Adidas tennis shoe introduced in 1978. He later coached for the United States Tennis Association and set up his own academy on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
